UMA NOVA NATO?

«(...)These [NATO] plans are perhaps an attempt to shift the Alliance’s military planning from one that is capability-based (a concept that tries to have a smattering of every military capability available), including some new ones), to one that is threat-based (a concept that looks specifically at competitors and builds/develops capabilities designed to counteract any weaknesses and build on opportunities for advantage).
Currently, NATO is driven by the equipment states have determined they need (or wish to retain), and will make available to NATO. The new concept would prioritise and presumably encourage states to change their priorities in favour of those the Alliance determines as important. What is difficult to imagine is how SACEUR will reconcile the ability to generate these forces with national prioritisation and deployment of forces by individual states: this is a fundamental dilemma that will need to be overcome if the concepts are to be useful.(...)?»

[S]everal organizations associated with the monarchy including the Queen's Commonwealth Trust and Head's Together had posted in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, but Meghan was the only royal to put her face and her name on a statement. Given current events, the Duchess "felt compelled to directly address and speak to these young women about what’s happening in this country right now around the killing of George Floyd—as well as what’s been happening over many, many years and many, many generations to countless other black Americans," a spokesperson for the Sussexes told Town & Country via email.  @T&C

« (...) [T]he prime minister’s 16 June announcement is that it is designed to appease these aid sceptics. If this interpretation were to gain ground, it is likely to be used by Keir Starmer, the opposition leader, to argue that, just as Labour moves back to the mainstream on foreign policy, this government is shifting decidedly away from it. Such an interpretation is still premature.»

In troubled times

Letter: Monarchs show their worth in troubled times

«It is somewhat disingenuous for Mark Mazower to dismiss the concept of monarchy as an institution (Books Essay, FT Weekend, May 23). He neglects to mention progressive countries such as Sweden and Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Belgium; and robust Asian monarchies like Japan and Thailand. The inference that monarchies are passé would come as a surprise to most of the subjects of those nations. In these days monarchs, including our own [GB], have provided the reassurance and leadership that elected politicians so often fail to.»

Grand Duchess Maria Wladimirovna

"Maria Vladimirovna has the support of most monarchist groups and followers, most societies of Russian nobles — including the Assembly of the Russian Nobility, and recognition of her claim by the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Kirill I Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia who, in a televised March 2013 interview, stated "Today, none of those persons who are descendants of the Romanoffs are pretenders to the Russian throne. But in the person of Grand Duchess Maria Wladimirovna and her son, Georgii, the succession of the Romanoffs is preserved — no longer to the Russian Imperial throne, but to history itself."
