Letter: Monarchs show their worth in troubled times
«It is somewhat disingenuous for Mark Mazower to dismiss the concept of monarchy as an institution (Books Essay, FT Weekend, May 23). He neglects to mention progressive countries such as Sweden and Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Belgium; and robust Asian monarchies like Japan and Thailand. The inference that monarchies are
passé would come as a surprise to most of the subjects of those nations. In these days monarchs, including our own [GB], have provided the reassurance and leadership that elected politicians so often fail to.»
